It All Started With….
It all started with a slight tickle in the back of my throat. Next it became a hacking cough and then that sent an infection down into my chest. I ended up lying in my bed feeling really sorry for myself on Christmas Eve (on my own as my wife and daughter were out at church) and that’s when the first pain hit me. Excruciating as it felt I thought to myself, ah, it’s only a sore chest, never once thinking it could be anything more serious. More to follow.

Christmas Day is here folks. The family is all home. The Prodigal son has returned for the seasons festivities (well for one night at least). What indeed has Santa brought this year? I wonder. With us all downstairs, dogs as well, we start to open our presents. Wife has about 8 presents, I have about 6. Son has about 15. Daughter, now wait for it, at least 50. FIFTY! Now I know that she is popular and her boyfriend spoils her, but FIFTY. This is one of the benefits of being a schoolteacher. All the kids tend to bring something in for the Miss. And of course, depending on what type of school you work in depends on the quality of gift that is sent in by the parent/s. This year, everything, and I mean everything that I received I can actually use. My biggest shock and surprise was when my wife turned round to me after all the hullabaloo had died down and gave me this tiny wrapped box. About the size of a pack of ciggies. Upon opening it I was delighted to see that it was an IPod. My very first ever. I had mentioned in passing once that it might be nice to have one so that I could have all my music with me wherever and whenever I wanted. I was amazed at the size of the actual device. The only thing I could compare it to would be a matchbook. I am going to have some fun with it, that’s for sure. I also got some books that I am looking forward to reading and a nice warm scarf to keep me warm for when I start my re-hab of going walking. Maybe soon I will be fit enough to walk all the way to the Turkish Barber I use and get a hair cut and shave using the gift token that I got from Santa (my son) I always love going there as he is so good at what he does and he makes me feel so good upon leaving his shop.

Next we go to church for the Xmas Special service and onwards to visit the in laws. After that the rest of the day is our own. By the time it comes to sitting down for Xmas Dinner I am starting to wane a wee tad and I feel as thought he Xmas Spirit has left me. I feel sooo drained. While the young ones go out my wife and I just stay in and watch a bit of telly. I go to bed early. Next day the proverbial hits the fan. I can’t make it out of bed. I am in such pain. I find it difficult to breathe and my chest weighs a ton. By the end of the day I phone the Dr. on call and she sends an ambulance out. They take some readings with this and that piece of equipment and realize something is not right so they whisk me off to A&E where I go on to have a heart attack (possibly my second inside two days)

So, 2009 has been my anus horribilus indeed. Five times inside this year alone. My New Year resolution is to stay out of hospital in 2010. I did say in my last blog comments section that I would list the highs and lows of 2009. Upon reflection there were so many lows that I couldn’t really think of any highs, although there was one very pleasant surprise on Xmas Eve morning. The phone rang and my wife took the call. She spoke for a while, as she tends to because nobody ever phones me to speak to me on the landline, hence me not answering the blessed thing. Then, she passes the phone to me and says it’s for you. It turns out that it was a certain Bulgarian friend who I worked with in The Tree nursery for some years. He was phoning me from Africa where he is doing some wonderful things for the less fortunate children, to wish me a Happy Christmas and New Year. I hadn’t seen or heard from him for a couple of years and for this call to come out of the blue like that can only be counted as a high. A big HI. You know who you are as I know you read this

So, going back to the first paragraph then. That pain in my chest was not just a sore chest. It was something more serious. Don’t take things for granted . I certainly won’t.

I will leave you for now as I need nap naps

Byse Byse

p/s One other thing that I found a bit amusing. Whilst I was in hospital they put me from a mixed ward into a side ward. I thought, well, they must know who I am and that I must have my privacy etc. But no, they put me in there as an isolation patient and I was being tested for……swine flu. Thankfully the tests came back negative. I was then put out on the main ward again. Maybe they didn’t know who I was after all !!!

I've been reading your blog for sometime now. Ran across your site doing some investigation for a possible trip to Northern Ireland. Had ancestors from Ballintoy. Anyway, I get a kick out of reading your blog - a lot of enjoyment - and I want you to know that I'm sending prayers your way for a speedy recovery and a much healthier 2010.

Keep writing in as that is what makes it all worth while. (It also puts a smile on peoples faces when things are going wrong) Fan from NY and Sunbury Snapper (do you think I don't know who you are?) you are most welcome. Feel free to join in anytime.

Welcome back McDuff! Met your wife on Christmas Eve and she confirmed what we all knew all along. We,re all a little bit mad here on your blog! But then again if everyone was on the same wavelength there would,nt be anything to waffle about.........true? So.......try to keep that resolution about staying out of hospital. Cheers for now.

I'll keep poking my head in now and then and will respond now that I have fessed up to reading the blog. Mickmak - I have been to NI. It was with a group of travel agents ('twas a detour in careers until I could get back into my previous job). For such a short trip, I saw quite a bit but we were obligated to touring hotels as well as visiting some of the sites. It was beautiful and since my great-grandfather was from Ballintoy, I started to think about the potential for a trip. I also had an aunt and uncle that lived in Bangor for 2 years or so while he managed an Oneida manufacturing plant that was there (believe it closed in the '60s). So anyways, everyone take care and especially you McDuff.

Fan from NY. Let me hang this on you. The only MD of Oneida that I knew / know a friend of mine. Was your uncle, by any chance, named after a certain bagless vacuum cleaner? If so, i was in the local Lions Club with him. That is of course if it was the Bangor Oneida plant that was opened in the 1960's and closed in the 1980's. I also went to school with his son. Small world eh.

His name is Art Morris and his wife is Mildred (Mil). They had 1 son and I don't believe he ever attended school there. So it closed in the 80's!! I guess what I am confusing it with is the fact that they brought him back to the states after a couple of years and he said that was due to 'the troubles'. They loved Bangor though! I directed my aunt to your site (she's in her mid-80's but a pretty savvy gal) but I don't think she quite got the hang of it. I'll have to remind her.

Mickmac, thought about you in church again, as the minister was mentioning if one sheep went over the cliff others would follow to their death and then more would follow and land on the dead ones and those would continue to live. Then he mentioned about the grate to keep the sheep in, and they proved to be smart by lying down and rolling over it rather than getting caught in it.

Small world indeed McDuff. I worked in Oneida from 1974 when it was indeed a manufacturing plant. It ceased production in 1986 but remained open as a warehouse until the end of July 2003 (it moved premises in 1990)when the new management team decided that it would be more viable operating from England. I know who you are talking about but never met the man. By all accounts he was well respected in the Company. The last local MD was also a well known gentleman from Bangor, Bill Gibson, who sadly passed away last year. Sorry to say that Art Morris may have been before my time although there were Americans in Oneida for a large number of years and the general consensus was that they all enjoyed living and working in "our wee town". Great to see new people on the Blog.

Tractor driving for the next few days, good place to do a bit of thinking and remembering, my goodness McD you have stirred up a hornets nest here, great innit!! Irene, sometimes the sheep are not that obliging, one will follow the leader and number three will decide to go back and visit the other five hundred behind, he is the one that I and Rex the kelpie have to have discussions with!! Oneida? was that silverware?

Yes Mickmak. In the early days Oneida stocked a wide range of Silver plated Tea sets, table items and cutlery along with countless patterns of stainless steel cutlery. Sadly with cheaper items being available from Eastern countries it became harder to compete and bit by bit the Factory suffered, as did the employees who were made redundant every few years. In the end a lot of the cutlery was made in the main plant in Sherril,New York and also in plants in Indonesia etc and shipped to us to sell.

I grew up in a small community near Sherrill. My Aunt and Uncle still live in Sherrill. Sadly, no more manufacturing. Last year, the company store had major discounts in preparation for closure. I don't know of the store's current status. But the whole family has ONEIDA for cutlery. I still turn flatware over in a restaurant to check the brand.

The Wife.
So here we go again, Mcduff decided it would be a good idea to go to look for a new laptop. He had to have an ambulance called to the store and he was whisked into hospital again. (protesting all the way). His poor sister who was with him rang me to say what had happened as I was at work. I had to do a mercy dash in the sub zero weather, only for him to say "I'm ok" which he clearly was not! So he is back in hospital again probably until at least Saturday.

Don't know about the road to recovery but I am home now. I told the Dr. that I would do better with home cooking and my own bed. I might have to go in again in a few weeks time for a 'procedure' that involves stuff that I don't want to think about. Thanks for all the support, my wife appreciates it and so do I!

McD delighted to see you back on the air, thank you also for the book, brilliant, even found a couple of photographs of friends from that era. I just ordered one to be sent to an old school mate from Bangor Tech who lives on the north coast of NSW, I know he will enjoy the read as much as I did. Mary and I hope that your health improves, when you have your relapses we do appreciate Mrs McD,s updates. Anorak, missing your banter, especially the battles with the bookies, hope you are well

Yes Mickmac i'm ahead of the Bookie at the moment, but i thought it might be a bit insensitive to be bangin' on while McD is a bit poorly. The Bangor book has some great pictures in it 'specially the Trinity School Football Team and glad to see Cecil's got a mention. They say one hour in yer own bed is worth more than five or six in someone else's,so stay home and get back to yer fighting weight McD.Health and wealth to all for 2010.
